In an interview with fan site, Glu Mobile EMEA studio head Chris White and Awakening Product Manager Martin Edelman explained that their desire to make such a game was based on their admiration for the 1986 animated film, as well as for the Marvel Comics series. Unlike the film adaptations, Awakening was planned as a turn-based tactics game with role-playing elements, with a story set in the early days of the 1980s animated series. In addition to the main campaign, Glu has included a multiplayer arena for taking down a local opponent (you pick between Autobot and Decepticon) as well as a series of challenges. During your turn, you can also scroll through unlocked robots and view stats, which is very useful for either planning future skirmishes or if you need to replay a failed mission. Glu employs cel-shaded graphics and a dynamic camera to really make the Transformers come alive, looking like they just stepped out of the cartoon and on to your iPhone. However, when you challenge a Decepticon for dominance, the action moves to a battle scene where you watch the two robots trade attacks. In the game screen, the Transformers look pretty good. Fan favorites appear at every turn, from Soundwave to Grimlock. It heightens the stakes, especially for Transformers devotees. All missions are designed around advancing this story, too – nothing is arbitrary. The story brings in the conversion of Jetfire, the rise of the Dinobots, and the establishment of the space bridge that connects Earth to Cybertron. They must generate energon cubes to power their teams by laying claim to dams, electric stations, and other sources of juice. When the game begins, the Autobots and Decepticons have just woken up from a four-million-year nap on the Ark. This tactic is key to victory in many scenarios. With banked energon, you may also call allies into battle from the lumbering Metroplex. Mercifully, you get a defense boost when in vehicle form.
You can also transform into vehicle mode for increased mobility (you even hear the classic transforming noise), but if you are caught another robot while in vehicle form, you cannot attack. The Decepticons are brutal, pulling few punches, especially when Trypticon enters the line-up. Keeping Ratchet alive so the ambulance can heal up other Autobots is essential, too. Seeking advantageous terrain like mountains and forests increases your defense and attack powers. For example, it just makes sense that parking Optimus Prime near other Autobots would give them a morale boost and increase their chances in battle. Thankfully, Transformers G1: Awakening is a thoughtful, balanced turn-based strategy game loaded with all the trimmings of the genre's best, such as easy controls (the touchscreen commands work well, although you may need to zoom in if you have difficulty choosing Autobots in crowded areas) and easy-to-understand support mechanics. In fact, that's a bigger recipe for disappointment and disaster. Of course, just tossing Optimus Prime into a turn-based strategy game isn't going to cut it – not with fans. Glu enlisted the crew of the classic cartoons and comics that remain so beloved to an entire generation. And not the Transformers of the recent movies, either. Glu's new Transformers G1: Awakening is just one of those games: it's Advance Wars, one of my favorite Game Boy Advance games, but it stars the Transformers. Every so often, you play a game that is so tailored to your interests that you have to wonder if the developer has been nosing through your emails or reading your journal.
